A Living Room Makeover: Modern Rustic

Your Living Room is without question one of your most lived in spaces in the home. It’s where your family comes together at the end of day and holds key memories for so many of us. When a room is so frequently used, it can be hard to blend function and style.

Where Do I Start?

The Modern Rustic trend is on the up and with our Interior Stylist Adam we’re here to break it down for you. At first it can be a little daunting how you’re supposed to nail the brief, so let’s strip it back to basics and start from the ground up, the Rug.

A Rug can really set the tone for the room and can be used as a part of your building blocks to form the foundations of your décor. To capture this aesthetic, Adam’s used the Matteo Rug.

“…to get the modern country look, something with a bit of texture is a key starting point”

Once you’ve laid your foundations, it’s about building up from there. Start with your bigger items, Sofa, Armchair or Bookcases. Continue to make your way around the room filling in the gaps; Coffee Table, Side Tables, Floor Lamp, or Ottoman, pieces your space commands without overcrowding.

How to balance Rustic & Modern

The key to finding balance within Modern Rustic, is taking nods from our country’s landscape, by means of tone and texture, and mixing them with clean lines and black finishes found within in modern furniture. Rustic tones can be highlighted in leather goods, distressed timber, or for those subtle details styling with terracotta linen pillows, throws or lamp shades are a great way to tie it together.

This style of décor doesn’t ask you to skimp out on storage or turn a living space stiff with discomfort. It’s warm, cosy and wants to be lived in. There is always a spot for personal touches; family heirloom, pictures, or vase just waiting to be styled with fresh flowers from the garden.

“So often when we think country, we think rustic. It’s taking those nods from the rustic and the landscape… and mixing them together with modern furniture with clean black lines”
